Iron (III) oxide
is used to make ferrites, which are ceramic compounds (Fe2O3). Ferrite cores are being used in transformers with a high-frequency supply voltage, such as in electrical circuits.

Steel, which contains silicon and is used in low-frequency transformers, cannot be used in high-frequency transformers due to hysteresis and eddy current loss.

Purpose of Ferrite Cores

Ferrite has a high permeability, making it ideal for use as a core material. It has a high resistivity as well. Eddy currents and hysteresis losses are held to a minimum as a result of this.

Ferrite is suitable for high-frequency transformer core design because of its high permeability and resistivity. The only negative is that, as a ceramic, it is fragile and susceptible to cracking.

It's also used in harmonic filters and other high-frequency filters.

Strong and soft ferrites are the two types of ferrites. Hard ferrites are used to create permanent magnets, whereas soft ferrites are used to make transformer cores.

Ferrite Core: Transformer Types

Manganese Zinc Ferrite (MnZn) - useful for inductors up to 70 MHz

Nickel Zinc Ferrite (NiZn) - Higher resistivity than MnZn, useful when the frequency range is from 2MHz to MHz in the several hundred and ideal for inductors over 70 MHz

Temperature and permeability play huge roles in ferrite core selection since ferrite materials begin to lose magnetic capabilities under 500 degrees Celsius. Ferrites are also classified by shapes such as:

E, I Cores - easy to construct with simple bobbin winding, making them useful for power and telecom inductors, along with broadband, converter and inverter transformers

ETD Cores - center post has minimal winding resistance, ideal for power transformers and inductors

EFD Cores - made with cross-sectional areas provide utility for compact transformers

EER Cores - based on a round center post, providing a shorter winding

Another way is to design a custom transformer to meet the specific requirements of a given application. Keep in mind that while customization can provide better output at a higher upfront cost, it may also provide better long-term cost efficiency.

Based on the materials used to make inductors, ferrites play a significant role in how they work. A ferrite, which is used as the magnetic core of a transformer, is made up of iron oxides mixed with other components. The choice of ferrite materials has a major effect on the application's results.
